ANAMOSA – Iowa’s budget battle will take new victims in the next ten days, and the victims claim the cuts endanger innocent people. Saturday, more than two dozen people picketed at the Anamosa State Penitentiary in protest.
On January 21, 2010, 11 counselors at the Anamosa State Penitentiary, two social workers and eight counselors at Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility and three at Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison will lose their jobs, said Sylvia Kelley, field organizer for Local 93 of the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), which has about 4,000 public and private sector members in Iowa.

Press Release: Members hold informational picket in Anamosa |
UE Local 893 Iowa United Professionals will be holding an informational picket Saturday January 9, 2010 at the Anamosa State Penitentiary 406 North High ST. Anamosa, IA 52205 at noon. The purpose of the picket is to inform the public of the impact the impending layoff of Correctional Counselors in Eastern Iowa Correctional Institutions will have on the public.
11 Counselors at the Anamosa State Penitentiary, 2 Social Workers and 8 Counselors at the Mt.Pleasant Correctional Facility and 3 at Ia State Penitentiary in Ft.Madison have received notice that they will be laid off effective mid January. These Counselors are responsible for the rehabilitative treatment programs for substance abuse offenders and sexual abuse offenders. Iowa State Penitentiary houses special needs offenders, many with dual diagnosis and mental health problems. These layoffs will cost the tax payers much more in the long run than the money reportedly being saved. Lack of treatment will mean either, offenders will stay behind bars longer or they will be released without treatment. Statistics show that treatment programs are effective and reduce the rate of recidivism. This is a matter of public safety. Our prisons are all ready over crowded. We know it costs less to supervise an offender in the community. We estimate the cost to house in prison at around $70.00 vs. $7.00 in the community. We estimate the State will save around $500,000 from these layoffs. If 40 offenders are kept incarcerated 6 additional months the State will have saved nothing and the safety of the public will be greatly endangered.
