| UE Local 893-IUP State Convention |
 |
|
 |
The annual convention of UE Local 893-Iowa United Professionals will begin 9:30 AM on July 24, 2010 at the Marina Inn in South Sioux City, NE. We encourage all of you to attend this event, as we will be dealing with several very important issues. We have reserved a block of rooms for both Friday and Saturday nights at the Marina Inn. You may make reservations by calling (402) 494-4000 and advising the staff that you are with UE/IUP. The cost of the room will be $75 per night for either one king or 2 queen beds. The deadline for getting a room at our special rate is FRIDAY JULY 10, 2010. If you will be attending but not staying overnight, please notify us by July 20, 2010 by calling the office at (515) 299-9840 or emailing iup@dwx.com to facilitate the luncheon planning. Either the attendee, or the President of each sub-local, may notify the office of plans to attend.

I felt it was time to update you on the recent events as well as future events. I will therefore begin with our Political Action Day on 1/28/2010 in Des Moines. Thank you to all members who took time out of their day to be here and participate in one our most important events.

| Fight Back on HF 2042 |
|

|
A bill to watch is HF 2042 by Representative Schultz from the Denison area. He believes that state workers are paid too much and therefore wants to freeze the wages as well as cutting our pay by 5 %. I am sure that he is not alone

| DHS Reorganization |

Upon the union’s request, Director Krogmeier and his staff met with the state officers and Greg Cross on 1/27/10. The Director stated that they did not have a lot of information at this time. No site has been picked or designated for the Centralized Unit. The Director stated that the total cost of the all changes need to minimal, as there isn’t any additional money. He did state in a positive aspect that the 4E Income Maintenance unit would continue to stay in their current job location. The HIPP workers will be moved to another location in Des Moines. The union requested that at the very least a field worker be part of the workgroups for the Child Abuse Intake unit as it did not appear that any were included at this time. We asked the Director to keep the Union as well as staff updated on any movement.

We have had recent retirements in our union that have included two officers. In a prior newsletter I had indicated that Beth Austin was going to be retiring and therefore did not run for Secretary. She did retire in December of 2009. As in the last newsletter, again we wish her well. Gary Walker also retired in December of 2009. Gary has been a long time member and has been an officer for many years. Gary was Treasurer of Local 893 for several years and most recently he was a Trustee. Gary will be missed as he had and has a great knowledge regarding the union. Best of luck to both of them in their retirement.
