Joining the Union now is more important than ever. As the
Iowa Legislature navigates through the current budgetary minefield, your
job --and the jobs of other state workers-- could be on the chopping
block. If your job is not in jeopardy, then your working conditions
certainly are.
Joining together as a strong united voice is the only way
to save our jobs and protect our working conditions.
Too many politicians believe laying off state workers is
the most cost-effective way to ‘solve’ Iowa’s budget problems.
Nothing could be further from the truth. As front-line
workers who deal with the problems of Iowa’s children and families, we
know staff cutbacks are a devastating blow to state workers and clients
alike. Greater caseloads means our clients don’t get the service or
attention they deserve. Our workday becomes more stressful.
We deserve better.
Our Union has mobilized to make our case to Iowa’s
lawmakers. Our Union was the only one to bring a delegation to the
Legislature’s special session in November 2001.
UE 893-IUP successfully fought to restore $3 million
dollars to the State budget, preventing massive layoffs in DHS.
But we need to continue the pressure. If you’re not a
