The wages and benefits enjoyed by public sector workers in Iowa are not a result of the State’s benevolence; they were fought for and won by the union members of UE Local 893 – IUP. Through decades of collective bargaining, the union has negotiated a strong contract that provides a good standard of living, the best available health insurance, vacation, personal leave, transfer rights and job security, just to name a few.

The Future Depends on You!

What we gain in future years depends on you. To have a strong union, every worker must belong and participate. In every struggle we face as State employees, from battles with the legislature, to grievances in our offices, our success depends on our unity as workers. If union membership is 50%, we will get only 50% of what we should have.

An article in the Wall Street Journal found that union dues are one of the best investments around, given their high rate of return. Its easy to see why, when you consider how costly not having a union would be. Over the years, Iowa workers would have taken pay freezes, not been paid for overtime, been unjustly fired, and had their health insurance eroded without union protection. Investing in your union is the best career move you can make.

The Members Run This Union!

In no other union do you as a member have so much influence. Union membership gives you voting rights, monthly newsletters and updates, political action materials, access to union meetings, stewards and staff. Most importantly, union membership gives you awareness, knowledge of what your rights are under the union contract and how to defend those rights.

Our Local is a democratic, rank and file Union controlled by the membership. Our officers serve on a voluntary basis and are not paid. Our annual state convention is open to every member of UE Local 893 – IUP on the same basis – one member, one vote. All decisions of the union are made by the membership, either through the convention, through the elected officers, or through the local membership meetings.
