The working families of Iowa insist on real leadership by
the Iowa Legislature. Laying off the front-line public sector workers who
provide critical services to the families and children of Iowa is NOT
the solution. But real solutions are readily available.
On behalf of the 6,000 working families in all 99 counties represented
by UE 893•IUP, here is our positive budget blueprint for dealing
with the budget crisis.
1.
Use the "Rainy Day" Fund
There is almost $500 million dollars in Iowa’s cash reserve.
2.
Review & Reduce Corporate
Welfare
The State of Iowa has subsidized corporations to the tune of $200
million dollars!
3.
Revisit Iowa’s Tax Code
The State loses nearly $3.86 billion dollars a year in tax
breaks, credits, etc. Many are unnecessary.
4.
Early Retirement for State Workers
A geniune offer for state employees negotiated with their unions could
deliver real savings.
5.
Reduce State Management Layers
This process should be done in consultation with front-line state
employees.
6.
Aid from the Federal Government
We recommend a delegation of Iowa lawmakers lobby the White House and
Congress.
7.
Low Interest Bonds
Interest rates are at a 40-year low. A sensible way to meet state needs
in tough times.
8.
Establish a State-Wide Public
Sector Health Insurance Fund
A public fund could save millions and protect us from profit-gauging
from insurance companies.
